The Art of Self-Discovery.
My journey of self-discovery began when I decided to enrich my life experience by helping others fulfill theirs. As I embarked on this journey to help others dig deep into their Soul to discover who they truly are, I quickly realized that this would require me to do the same in my life, and in fact, to a much deeper level. So I began a vigorous process of self-discovery. This at times was a process that was painful, raw, and I found myself vulnerably exposed, but what I revealed about myself was transcending and transformational. The greatest gift about my continued commitment to undergo this process is that I get to impart all my experiences with the people who come into my existence; invaluable and worth every painstaking tear.
In this article, I will take you through a methodology that I continue to use to help with embarking on a transformational journey of self-discovery. What I will present to you is a process of PRE-self-discovery, which I believe will best prepare you for your transformational journey, and will allow you to decide if you are ready for this epic journey.
Step One: What Is Your Definition Of Self-Discovery?
Now before embarking on this transformational journey, there are a few “trivial” things I suggest anyone considers. The first consideration is your current definition of self-discovery. This is a powerful first step, because if you have a solid definition of what self-discovery means to you, it can empower you to move ahead despite any impeding blocks. Also be aware that your definition may change with time, and that is perfectly suited for non-static and ever evolving life we live. For example, I use to define self-discovery as: an opportunity to learn about myself (I would say this was an adequate definition for an adequate level of depth in my self-discovery process at the time). This definition did drastically change once I opened the flood gates to digging deep within my life experiences and began uncovering old “junk” that had been accumulated (def: “old junk” refers to suppressed and or over expressed experiences and emotions). This “junk” was innately swept under a giant carpet that in the end was not so magical. After a few attempts at a magic carpet ride, out of desperation to understand why these wonderfully repressed experiences were not disappearing; I understood that these experiences and emotions only perpetuate and manifest throughout my life as powerful blocks, hidden so deep within myself, that unless I made a conscious decision to dig them out they would continue to manifest in ways I was no longer willing to experience. After a long haul and some deep mining, I uncovered my gold and now define self-discovery as Life-Transforming and Transcending, a definition that serves my urge to continue to dig deep to uncover all that “junk” and turn it into gold (a bit of Alchemy never hurt anyone).
Step Two: Identify Your Fears.
One major emotional behavior that is familiar to many of us is the element of Fear. Yes, keeping your enemy (Fear) closer is not always going to work, but it does serve a great purpose. Looking at fear will help you identify what may be holding you back from taking a journey that is rightfully yours for the realization of your Greatest Life. So let’s name it! What scares you about the process of discovering who you really are? Is it reviving those demons you locked away in your hidden chest of hope (hoping they would disappear on their own)? Is it an experience you never want to remember because it was so horrific? Whatever it is, write it down, this process will bring awareness to you, which will in turn begin a process of allowing you to release your fears instead of holding onto them.
Step Three: What Gets You Excited?
Now on the other side of fear, we can find excitement, because what doesn’t scare you usually excites you. Have you ever wanted to do something but were held back by fear, and somehow, something pushed you forward, and you experienced pure excitement! And once you experienced this excitement, you were able to tackle that same activity with a bit more ease. Excitement can overcome Fear! So what would excite you about learning more about who you really are? Could it be the possibility that you might be AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL and GODS GIFT TO THIS WORLD? Could it be the opportunity to discover some hidden passions, talents and Love for Life? How exciting is that! Write it all down!
Step Four: State Your Intention.
As a standard practice I attempt to consistently follow in all that I do (even in the very emails I send), is to always set my intention. In fact, my intention for this article is to inspire you to take a journey of self-discovery of any depth. The impact of stating your intention sets the tone and creates your true reality. You must be crystal clear about WHY you want to do something. This takes practice, time, a great deal of focus, but mostly HONESTY with yourself (I will admit I am really good at lying to myself). So ask yourself, why do you want to embark on a journey of self-discovery? What is your intention in doing this? Be clear, be honest and take your time. Setting your intention will always set you FREE, and sometimes we have to work through some lies before we get to our TRUE intention, so be patient with yourself.
Lastly, I believe if you have followed these steps, you should be best prepared, and can responsibility start to dig deep within your Soul, and uncover some pretty amazing stuff about yourself and start to experience unadulterated life as it was meant for you to experience.
Oh Yes… One more Step before we conclude our journey together… Step Five: Repeat this process as often as you can!
Wishing you great success!
